that crazy lady in home depot

Would be me. When Luke and I were on one of our bi-weekly trips to Home Depot, I noticed a pile of clearance hardware and the words clearance and hardware together meant I made a bee line for it.
They were all the Martha Stewart line and had these gorgeous brass pulls and knobs and chrome bar pulls. So I bought over 50 of them. (the brass pulls are online right now for $2) Do I have a place for them? No. Would you have passed up these for $1.50 a piece, down from $6? I didn't think so, so no judging here right?
Just call me the hardware lady.

MY STYLE: Maxi skirt 3 ways

I was so glad you all liked my style: chambray 3 ways post last week so I decided to round up another 3 ways I wear one of my other staples, the maxi skirt.
Easy for running around for errands or an office day with stripes and field jacket.
Peplum and aztec belt for date night :-)
Loose, pink and chambray might just be my favorite. Easy.
What about you, do you bust out the maxi skirt on a regular basis?

FOOD: no bake energy bites

I'm always starving around 4:00 PM and am constantly on the search for healthy snacks. Well these no bake energy bites from the blog smashed peas and carrots are just that, delicious and nutritious. (you like that rhyme? You know you do).
They were super easy to whip up and you can't eat just one, for reals. The recipe has been floating around pinterest for a while, have you made them?

DIY gold floral wallpaper

I have been loving the gold floral wallpaper that we have all seen floating around the blogsphere (from Oh Joy!) so when I realized I had a floral stencil from Michaels I jumped at the chance to try and DIY my own version.
This project cost me around $8 for the gold paint at Home Depot and the stencil. I already had the roller (super smooth 4" roller). There is really no rhyme or reason to how you do it, the one thing I learned pretty quickly was to have the least amount of paint possible on the roller, it gets super gunky if you have a lot of paint.
It added a fun little corner for me to work on blogging, don't you think?

around here

For those who don't follow me on instagram (acreativedayblog), you missed this goodness. Little miss found her new favorite nap place. When she is 100 lbs, I don't think she will quite fit so she's enjoying it while she can.
I've become a major plant person, I have plants all over our house and I've gotten quite the green thumb, pretty proud of myself. This newest succulent (so easy to take care of) is making me so happy. Isn't she pretty?

Everyone of your comments about my before and after LR and DR made me smile, thanks for the love guys :-) I thought I found great deals shopping this week, so glad you agree and it was fun showing my favorite 3 ways to wear chambray.

Happy Friday! We are planning on escaping the torrential downpour expected this weekend by staying dry and warm inside, watching a movie and cuddling with the puppy. Can't wait :-)

I went shopping

Remember when I was going to the mall last weekend for this bathing suit? We my ae didn't have it, bummer, so I think I'm going to order it online. But I did find a bathing suit at target that I love, super flattering and looks way more expensive then it is. I would have bought it in the black too if they had my size. Thinking of hitting up another target to see if I can hunt it down.

I also grabbed this dress which reminds me a lot of a lily dress, don't you think? A lot of look for $22!
And this chambray dress from F21 which is super soft. Reminds me of the jcrew one.
I have my eye on warm weather and am totally keeping my new bathing suit out just so I can look at it and dream about when I can wear it. Come on spring!
Its almost the weekend ya'll, we made it!

chambray: my style

Chambray is such an easy staple and its thrown on more than I care to admit around here. I thought I would round up my 3 favorite ways I wear my chambray, and would love if you would let me know your favorite ways to wear it. I'm always looking for more options :-)
1 - For Meetings: with a favorite old anthro skirt, target sequin jacket and diy leather tassel necklace.
2 - Everyday Wear. DIY distressed jeans, aztec scarf, leather jacket and DIY studded leather bracelet

Rowan wasn't impressed with mom's photo session.
3 - Comfy: knotted with a maxi and graphic tee

So spill: what is your favorite way to style your chambray?

MY HOUSE: before and kinda after.

You know we've been working like crazy on the house since we moved in a month and a half ago and I'm finally feeling like its liveable.

I was hesitant about showing the pictures before its completed because I've always thought I had to have at room done before the post. But this post by Jenny reminded me of the truth that in blogging we can share not just the result but the progress. That's what makes blogging different.
So my goal in this house renovation is to let you into my head more, share why I'm doing what and not being afraid of progress pictures. What do you think? Are you ok with progress, not the finalized product?

Here's the before: taken the day we moved in:
Our dining room goes into our living room which has a sweet little fireplace, but it was in such bad shape with the plaster crumbling off the walls and the popcorn ceiling. That light fixture came down first day, for reals.
So we taped off the front two rooms completely from the rest of the house and got to work. We put up new drywall over all the old plaster and ceiling, sanded, primed and painted every surface.
So here is where we are now, no rugs (not until little miss puppy is potty trained) no drapes or artwork but fresh.
I knew I wanted all white walls, white with warmth but not grey. Color without color if that makes sense. Nan, my boss, is the most talented person I've ever met with paint. Everything she picks hits the nail on the head, so needless to say, she picks every color in my house. My favorite part is we painted the walls and ceiling in high gloss. Its GORGEOUS. New massive crown molding and trim around the windows still needs to be installed but I'm SO happy with the results.

holiday monday

I've been trying to think of something clever to say about the long weekend, but all I can think of is I hope you get to sleep in and have some hot tea, because hot tea is the best.

color

I always get really excited in the spray paint aisle, don't you? So many colors, so many possibilities. I picked up a few different colors for some weekend projects that I'm pretty excited about. BTW, Valspar really is the BEST spray paint, trust me I've tried them all. Great coverage, even color and good sheen. Its all I buy, and I buy a lot :-)

Did you have a good Valentine's Day? I did, and by that I mean we had Whole Food's pizza for dinner and watched 2 (ok 4) episodes of the Mentalist. Things got crazy.

I'm heading to the mall first thing Saturday morning to search out this bikini, before the droves come out. I HATE the mall when its busy, I refuse to go shopping any time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and avoid the afternoon rush and traffic like the plague. Am I a hermit? Maybe.

I know I said I've been working on a blogging schedule, but I'm lost as to what to work on for next week. Any ideas?

Great reminder

How cute does Liz look?

I've been loving Alyssa's blog

My ultimate girl crush. for reals

Trying this hair treatment this weekend, already have the conditioner!

And playing with her. I know right? Cutest thing ever

blogging 2.0

Back in August I posted the question, how do you blog? Are you more of a planning ahead blogger or a day by day? I loved hearing all your comments and I talked about how I wanted to get more of a system in place and I'm here to report back on how I'm doing with that.

Basically I feel 100% better about my blogging system and I think I found the perfect solution for me. This post by sincerely, kinsey was incredible help to blogging with a busy schedule.

1. I've developed consistent topics for my blogging week that stay true to what this blog is all about. Its a plan that keeps me on point but still open whenever inspiration strikes.

2. Stay on schedule. I know what I love and what I want to cover in a week, and planning it out by day helps me stay focused. A typical week might look like this...
Monday - DIY
Tuesday - recipe / more flexible
Wednesday - fashion, outfit post, wants. etc
Thursday - house update
Friday - weekend links

3. Do it ahead of time.
I have been trying to stay a week or so ahead of my blogging plan. If I plan in advance, it allows me to be creative without being frantic the night before the post is due.

These three things have freed me up to love blogging and not be stressed about creating great content on the fly.
What do you think, would a blogging system be helpful for you or would you feel constricted?

tribal bikini (splurge vs steal)

Its no secret I'm all about the tribal trend. I've been lusting after this mara hoffman
bikini but the price tag had me second guessing myself. Considering my bikini's normally end up kayaking in the surf I hesitate to drop over $200 on one. Then I saw this ae bikini on the Today show. Problem solved. Definitely in my spring wardrobe.
What about you, have you started shopping for bathing suits or is it still too cold for you?

Meet my fur baby

Her name is Rowan and I'm totally obsessed with her.
Napping with daddy...(check out the old sofa that is normally under the white slip cover, nice right? Totally vintage from the college days)

Sneak peak of my newly painted bright and happy dining room.

cartas de amor

Jen at Made By Girl is such a rockstar. She's an amazing artist, has such an inspiring faith and is so in love with her husband. I was thrilled when she asked me to be a part of Cartas de Amor, a beautiful publication of love letters. Not only is it a collection of 18 personal love letters from our significant others, but a lot of fun valentine's day projects and gifts,  check it out here!

that one crazy night

That one night were we decided to come home from work, finish sanding both room, clean up and prime all the walls and ceilings until 1 AM. Yeah that happened last night. I had to check in to share our crazy night. This would happen to us.
1. Forget we were using oil based primer and forget to open the doors so we both start feeling dizzy.
2. Get oil based primer all over my face and hair and no amount of mineral spirits will get it off.
3. At 1 AM, Luke gets in the shower and I'm sitting on the couch checking my phone and a FREAKING BAT flies in our open door. Proceed screaming at the top of my lungs, Luke jumps out of the shower and doesn't have any clothes and proceeds to put on MY little robe and run around the house chasing it. We finally get it out and just look at each other laughing.
So that was my night, how is yours?

This weekend

As I'm writing this, I'm completely covered in sheetrock dust. My eyelashes and hair are grey and my pants have so much dust I'm afraid to sit down. Needless to say I'm looking good.
Its all for a good reason, this weekend we are FINALLY painting my living room and dining room. Remember when it looked like this? The new sheetrock is up, mudded and sanded. So excited to finally be at the fun stage of all of this! I'll be updating progress on instagram, so make sure you follow along

Emerald

I must have seen the emerald train coming because I wore this emerald maxi skirt like a champ last summer and fall. Proof is here. Lets pretend that I'm a trend setter.
And now thats its here and officially the color of the year, I'm embracing it.

I'm planning to find a spot in my office for this fun sconce from urban. So affordable!

I wouldn't say no to these stunners either. from baublebar.

I would say I'm on board, how about you?

getting great photos (how to)

I've really been working on my photography skills around here, having great pictures for DIY's is a MUST. I thought I would share what has made the most difference to me.

1. The magic white background
I was always frustrated because I didn't have a good clean white background to shoot on.  Then boom, I had some poster board for a project and realized it was the perfect background. Sometimes the best ideas are right in front of you right?

No one needs to know how messy your table is if you have a clean white space to take pictures on. Case in point.

2. Good Lighting
Take pictures by a window during the day ALWAYS. No grainy or dark pictures.

 3. Be consistent. Find a style and stick with it. I like putting the title of the post on the first picture so its easy to understand what the DIY is about. Find what works for you!

Hope this helps!

DIY {leather tassel necklace}

The DIY fringe booties I did last week unleashed a leather loving monster and I have been trying to find what else I can add a little leather too. I loved Jenny's DIY leather tassel keychain so I used the same idea to make a fun leather tassel necklace.
What else can I add a tassel too?

Happy Weekend!

Luke and I went to the cutest coffee shop this week for a mini date and I fell in love with the individual coffee carafe and tea pots. They had a wall of all different colors, shapes and sizes of vintage tea pots, it was so fun and cozy. I'm going to see if I can talk Luke into getting off early so we can head back again this afternoon :-)

instagram: acreativedayblog

Such a fun week for the blog, loved seeing Luke as part of the man behind the blog series, and glad everyone liked the cookie dough greek yogurt, its so good!

I've been reading everyone's awesome Alt recaps and loving each one.

What do you want for Valentine's day? Do ya'll celebrate big or just flowers and a card? I think I want something fun for the house that will remind me of Valentines whenever I use it... like these.  I'm not a super romantic but love the idea of little reminders :-)
