making your house yours

One of my friends who came over to my house told me that every piece in my house feels like it means something, each piece was special. That was the highest praise she could have given me and it got me thinking about what it means to have a meaningful home. With this house, I have been trying not to buy things that don't mean anything to me, less filler pieces. I'm getting to the point where I only want to buy pieces if they are perfect, not just if they work and will get me through.
We hung a piece of driftwood I collected (read: hoarded) above our front door and it makes me happy every time I look at it (read: hoarder tendencies). Or the candle Luke and I bought on a date day to Anthro. Its pieces like this that mean the most to me, not the latest trinket I picked up at Target. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE me some Target, but I constantly find myself reaching for things I don't need and don't really like after a couple of months.
What do you think about having pieces that mean something to you?

  1. Wow! What a great compliment! In our first apartment, I was quick but whatever I thought was pretty at Ikea, Target, and HomeGoods - but now I am very picky about what I buy. I want things to be special and last a long time! This is always one of my most important tips to people!

  2. I really want to get to this point. I'm so guilty of grabbing everything at that catches my eye at Home Goods and Target. I want to make the items around my home more purposeful and not cluttered. Thanks for the inspiration! :)

  3. I couldn't agree with you more Eileen. My husband doesn't like to hang anything on our walls that came from a "store". Over the years it's been really frustrating trying to decorate with that in mind but now when I look around our home everything has a story or a history. It's so comforting.

  4. I totally agree with you! Those are the kind of pieces that really stay with you for a very long time, as opposed to something that is just trendy
